The hype around technologies

The hype around technologies

Kia ora e hoa,
Enjoying your morning? (or afternoon, or evening?) I’ve decided to change up the newsletter a little bit.
Instead of the newsletter forcing a massive chunk of text at you, I want it to act as a conveniently central point to access my crazy ideas and findings for the week.
I plan to have a little blurb, what I found interesting, then links to content that was found or created if you wish to have a more in-depth look. I’m hoping this works better for everyone… But I would love feedback.
Moving on, technological discoveries are made every day. Sometimes there is significant hype where promises are made but aren’t delivered. And I’m guilty of falling into this trap talking about web 3.0 and artificial intelligence. Want to read more about this topic? I’ve linked a blog post below.
As you may know, I’ve had some time to chill out at home. This has given me time to reflect on my career, and in my recent video, I’ve provided my five likes and dislikes about being an optometrist.
Thanks for reading, and all the best for the week ahead.
Ngā mihi nui,
Shivan :)

Discoveries
  1. Video Homework for Life In an effort to improve storytelling, Matthew Dicks provides us with a 5-minute exercise, done daily, for the rest of our lives. All you have to do is write a brief story of what happened on that day. Most of us think we live disinteresting lives, but this daily habit forces us to look for stories in our lives rather than letting events happen to us.
  2. Podcast Primer: Microworking for the Weekend An interesting ethical look into massive technology companies. Underprivileged workers are paid close to nothing to train machine learning models for use in the first world.
  3. Film The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind This 2019 film is based on the true story of Trywell Kamkwamba who saves his village of Wimbe, Malawi from famine simply by using the wind.
